Rohit's Return to Ranji Ends After 19 Balls; He Scores 3 Against J&K

Rohit's Return to Ranji Ends After 19 Balls; He Scores 3 Against J&K

Rohit Sharma was dismissed for just 3 runs against Jammu and Kashmir in Ranji Trophy.

For the Ranji Trophy Rohit Sharma made a return but he lasted for only 19 balls and was able to score only 3 runs for Mumbai’s group A fixture against Jammu and Kashmir played at Sharad Pawar Academy in BKC in Mumbai.
Rohit, India's Test and ODI captain, had been struggling with his form, so he drew a lot of attention before the game. He confirmed he would play with a simple nod and an "I will" at the Champions Trophy squad announcement last week. Wearing a white floppy hat and sunglasses, Rohit looked relaxed before the game, joking with his teammates while they warmed up with head volleyball.
But he walked with Yashasvi Jaiswal to open his performance after Mumbai’s captain
Ajinkya Rahane, he looked quite determined. To let Rohit and Jaiswal play Mumbai decided to drop off Ayush Mhatre who was recently in his debut season and was one of their star performers by scoring 408 runs in just nine innings with an average of 45.33 consisting of two centuries.
In Mumbai, it was a kinda cool winter morning, and it was a relief after around a week that the temperature touched the mid-30s. Where J&K bowlers make sure that they take full advantage of the temperature.
Aqib Nabi gave away a four in the first over, but he quickly improved and bowled more accurately. Rohit started by taking a single on the side. Whereas Umar Nazir Mir gave him two maiden bowls continuously. Mir managed to maintain a consistent line outside off as over the lengths of touch, which didn’t allow Rohit to make runs.
Rohit managed to hit a Nabi delivery through the covers for a couple of runs in the next over. However, Mir kept him quiet and eventually got him out on his 17th ball. Mir bowled a length delivery that moved away slightly from Rohit, who tried to play a pick-up shot over midwicket but ended up getting a leading edge. Paras Dogra ran a few yards to his left from mid-off to extra cover, called for it, and caught the ball, ending Rohit's innings.
His short stay confirmed that his performance at the Red ball game wasn’t appealing. Last year, in the five-test series of Bangladesh and New Zealand at home he was been able to make only half a century. Along with four single-digit scores in ten innings. Rohit only scored double digits once in five innings in Australia, where he played three of the five Test matches. He ended the 2024-25 Test season with a batting average of 10.93.
Rohit's first-class batting average of 10.43 in 16 innings in the 2024-25 season is the second-lowest for any batter since 2006 (for a minimum of 15 innings while batting in the top six). England's Haseeb Hameed had the lowest, averaging 9.44 in 18 innings during the 2018 season.
Before Rohit, Jaiswal got out. Nabi bowled well against the left-hander, getting a couple of balls to move away. One of those slightly missed Jaiswal's bat, but the appeal was turned down. On the third ball of the third over, Nabi bowled a length ball that sharply came back in. Jaiswal was caught by surprise, missed it, and got hit on the back leg right in front of the stumps. The umpire quickly gave him out. Jaiswal, who had been one of India's best batters in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, walked off with just 4 runs.
