Rohit Sharma: Third Indian Captain to Suffer ODI Series Defeat Against Sri Lanka

Three Indian Captains along with Rohit Sharma who have lost an ODI series in Sri Lanka.

In a recent series with Sri Lanka Indian Cricket team faced an embarrassing defeat in the third and final match and lost the series by 0-2. And after this loss, Rohit has now joined the company of Mohammad Azharuddin and Sachin Tendulkar who lost the ODI Bilateral series from the island nation. 
India lost to Sri Lanka by 110 runs in the third ODI at R Premadasa Stadium, Colombo, on August 7, 2024. This defeat ended a 27-year streak where India had never lost a bilateral ODI series to Sri Lanka. The ODI series that India lost last was against the Lankan Lions back in 1997 and at that time Sachin Tendulkar was the captain. And India skipper Azharuddin was the first Indian captain to lose a bilateral ODI series to Sri Lanka in 1993.

In 1993 India had a great start for the ODI series as they secured a one-run victory in the first game held in Colombo. But Sri Lanka made a remarkable comeback and defeated India by eight runs. And even after providing the best performance India got a four-wicket loss in the third match and the series was won by Sri Lanka at a 2-1 ratio. 
1997: India Loses 3-0 Under Tendulkar's Captaincy
Now just after four years, India was defeated by Sri Lanka again when Sachin Tendulkar took the captaincy. In the first match, India couldn’t chase a target of 303 runs, even though Ajay Jadeja and Mohammad Azharuddin scored brilliant centuries. That’s how Sri Lanka won all three ODI matches that one however the third one was replayed due to bad weather.
