Rutherford scores a century, helping West Indies break the losing streak against Bangladesh

West Indies recorded the highest successful chase at St Kitts to take an early lead in the three-match ODI series.

Rutherford’s excellent performance helped West Indies break the 11-game losing streak against Bangladesh because his 113 runs in 80 balls made the team take the early lead. Rutherford's first ODI century, along with his fifth straight 50+ score, was well supported by captain Shai Hope's 86. Together, they helped the hosts recover from a slow start to easily chase down 294, the highest successful chase at Warner Park in St Kitts.
West Indies seemed to be in trouble during the chase, reaching only 130 for three after 30 overs, needing 164 runs from 120 balls. Hope played a steady innings with a calm half-century to hold things together, while Rutherford started slowly, scoring just 19 runs off 29 balls as the required run rate kept rising.
Bangladesh has made sure that their finish is also strong in their first innings with the balls as Brandon King has been trapped by Tanzim Hasan Sakib in LBW. Evin Lewis was struck on the pads by a fast delivery from Nahid Rana, leaving West Indies at 27 for 2 in the ninth over, needing to get their chase back on track. Hope then built a 67-run partnership with Keacy Carty in 13.3 overs for the third wicket. However, the in-form Carty mistimed a short ball from Rishad Hossain and hit it straight to short mid-wicket, adding to West Indies' troubles just as they seemed to stabilize.
The required run rate reached eight runs per over as West Indies captain Shai Hope reached his 26th ODI fifty. However, the slow pace couldn't continue for long, with just two boundaries in 28 balls during the middle overs. The momentum shifted when Hope hit Mehidy Hasan Miraz for a six. Rutherford joined in during the 32nd over, smashing Miraz for a four and a six over the bowler's head. He kept the pressure on with another boundary off Taskin Ahmed and followed it up with a six and a four off Nahid Rana, reaching his half-century in just 48 balls.
West Indies’ chase gained momentum with a flurry of boundaries and didn’t slow down, even after losing Hope for a well-played 86 off 88 balls. Justin Greaves kept the tempo by hitting his first ball for a boundary, while Rutherford shifted gears at the other end. Rutherford’s next fifty came in just 29 balls, including two sixes against Taskin. He reached his maiden century in the 47th over, thanks to an overthrow that gave Bangladesh six runs. Celebrating the milestone, Rutherford smashed two more sixes off Soumya Sarkar before getting out on the next ball. By then, West Indies needed just six runs, which they comfortably scored with 14 balls to spare, as Greaves remained unbeaten on 41.
Bangladesh might have hoped for a closer contest, especially considering their position earlier in the game. Batting first, they posted a strong total, led by Tanzid Hasan’s 60 off 60 balls. Soumya Sarkar supported him with a quick 19, hitting three boundaries before falling to Romario Shepherd. After Litton Das got out cheaply, Tanzid partnered with Mehidy Hasan Miraz, who scored 74 off 101 balls and anchored the innings with a 79-run stand for the third wicket.
In the 38th over, Miraz got out, but Bangladesh was ready with their experienced player Mahmudulllah and Jaker Ali to complete the last few overs. Both together played well and added 96 runs in just 12.3 overs which consists of many sixes. Mahmudullah remained not out with a 44-ball 50, while Jaker narrowly missed his half-century, getting out for 48 on the second-last ball of the innings. Despite their contributions, their efforts were not enough in the end.
