Santner Takes Four Wickets as New Zealand Wins by 423 Runs
Mitchell Santner became the 13th man to score 40-plus runs and take three or more wickets in both innings of a Test.
On the fourth day, New Zealand completed the formalities, winning the Hamilton test by 423 runs and ending the series by 1-2. In terms of the runs this became New Zealand’s biggest test win ever and the excellent way to send off their veteran and stars in Tim Southee. The former captain held onto a stump as a souvenir while leading the team off the field during the second session, after England lost their last wicket.
England’s one of the better stars Ben Stokes chose not to bat, which is why the team was already short of batters but started their day chasing a target of 659 gonna be noble. England began the batting with Jacob Bethell and Joe Root attacking New Zealand.
The pair played aggressively, and it worked for a while despite a few close calls. Root was dropped by Tom Latham off Southee when he was on 19 but shrugged it off as he and Bethell began smashing boundaries. Their partnership of 104 runs came in just 125 balls, with both reaching well-deserved fifties. However, England's momentum didn't last much longer.
Root missed the sweep off Mitchell Santner and fell LBW, and Harry Brook was unsettled by Will O'Rourke, who got him caught in the slip cordon shortly after. Bethell, however, continued his counterattack, smashing three boundaries in an O'Rourke over and quickly racing into the seventies. But a moment of recklessness cost him as he hit the first ball of Southee's new spell straight to deep point. At 166/5, England's innings began to unravel.
Gus Atkinson and Ollie Pope kept the momentum going until Pope missed a reverse lap off Matt Henry and was bowled. Atkinson took on Santner with some big hits but was caught trying another aggressive shot, giving Santner the upper hand. Two balls later, Matthew Potts fell the same way, and Brydon Carse was stumped as he charged down the track, handing Santner his fourth wicket of the innings and seventh of the match. Santner's brilliant performance earned him the Player of the Match award.
