Shafali Verma left out of Australia ODI; Richa Ghosh and Priya Punia made a comeback
Both Shafali Verma and Pooja Vastrakar aren't part of the squad.
On the tour to Australia for the three ODIs Shefali Verma has been dropped off from the Indian Team women’s squad due to a bad performance, meanwhile, Richa Gosh the wicketkeeper and batter to be returned has missed the Home ODIs against New Zealand because of her board exams.
Call Up batters like Harleen Deol, Priya Punia and offspinner Minnu Mani along with the Fast Bowler Titas Sadhu who were also part of 16 member squad for for the three ODI in Perth on December 5, 8 and 11 and Three ODIs.
Asha Sobhana the legspinner who has recently missed a series against New Zealand due to some injury will not be available, and on the other hand, allrounder Pooja Vastrakar will be resting for the series. From the squad offspinner Shreyanka Patil, uncapped seamer Sayali Satghare, spin-bowling allrounder D Hemalatha and Backup Wicketkeeper Uma Chetry will not be available.
Middle-order batter Tejal Hasabnis, legspinner Priya Mishra, and fast bowler Saima Thakor, who all impressed during their debuts against New Zealand, have kept their places in the squad to face Australia.
Shafali Verma has struggled in ODIs this year, scoring just 108 runs at an average of 18 in six matches. The last time she was dropped from the 50-over format was after the first game of the three-match series against Australia at home in December 2023. At that time, Yastika Bhatia opened alongside Smriti Mandhana, while Richa Ghosh batted at No. 3. With Shafali missing again, Yastika is likely to open, and Priya Punia could get a chance to try for the No. 3 position.
Since 2023 Punia has been able to play three ODIs and this year she made a comeback by giving an excellent domestic performance that would be against South Africa in June. Now she is going to be in the final ODI that is against South Africa and before that, she took part in the India A tour against Australia that doesn’t go well for her. However, she was left out of the New Zealand series in Ahmedabad in October, where Yastika Bhatia took the No. 3 spot. Hemalatha, who played three ODIs this year at No. 3 and No. 4, could not secure her place in the team.
Deol is also one of the familiar names that is coming back after almost a year. She has only played ten ODIs after her debut in 2019 and was able to score fifties. He also had played her last ODI against Australia the previous year.
Titas Sadhu who is already been featured in T20I but needs to make an international debut will be there as the backup fast bowler with Renuka Singh and Arundhati Reddy. Spinner Minnu and Sadhu have been able to play in T20Is for India and now is named in the squad.
The ODIs are part of the Championship, with Australia and England leading the table. India, as hosts, have already secured automatic qualification for the 2025 World Cup. Harmanpreet Kaur and her team recently defeated New Zealand 2-1, while Australia last played ODIs in March, winning their series against Bangladesh 2-1 in Mirpur.
Additionally, players like Smriti Mandhana, Jemimah Rodrigues, Yastika Bhatia, and Deepti Sharma are currently in Australia participating in the WBBL.
