Bangladesh’s chance to reach the Super 8 stage of the 2024 T20 World Cup got better after they won by 25 runs against the Netherlands. This match was on Thursday, 13th June, at Arnos Vale Ground in St Vincent. Shakib Al Hasan scored 64 runs and Rishad Hossain took 3 wickets, helping Bangladesh defend their total of 159 runs. This win also means that Sri Lanka can’t move to the next stage of the competition.
What made the divergence?
Bangladesh's batting in the last few overs and Rishad Hossain's good bowling helped them win. They only had 105 runs in 15 overs but scored 54 more runs in the last five overs. Shakib Al Hasan made a steady 50 runs, and Mahmudullah and Jaker Ali also played well. Before Rishad took the foremost wickets in his last two overs and Mustafizur Rahman bowled very tightly the Netherlands was doing great.
BANGLADESH:
Initial overs: 54/2 [RR: 9.00, 4s/6s: 8/1]
The Netherlands made a smart change by bringing in Aryan Dutt instead of Teja Nidamanuru, and it worked well. Dutt, who bowls off-spin, got Najmul Hossain Shanto out when he tried a tricky shot called a reverse sweep early in the game.
Then, Tanzid Hasan started hitting big shots, getting 18 runs in one over with six and two fours against Vivian Kingma. But Dutt struck again when Litton Das tried a big hit and was caught by Sybrand Engelbrecht, who made an amazing diving catch.
Throughout this, Tanzid Hasan kept playing aggressively, hitting more boundaries. Shakib Al Hasan also joined in, scoring more runs with strong shots. Bangladesh scored a bunch of runs in the first six overs of the game, blemishing their third-best start in T20 World Cup history.
Middle overs: 51/2 [RR: 5.66, 4s/6s: 5/0]
Tanzid hit two boundaries off Bas de Leede. Soon after, he was caught by van Meekeren trying to pull a shot against the wind. The Netherlands limited Bangladesh to 22 runs in four overs after the powerplay. Dutt bowled tightly, conceding only five runs in his last over and taking two wickets. Pringle dismissed Towhid Hridoy, leaving Bangladesh at 89/4. Shakib and Mahmudullah managed a boundary each, but the Netherlands controlled the scoring in the middle overs.
Death Overs: 54/1 [RR: 10.80; 4s/6s: 2/6]
Shakib was cautious as he approached his fifty runs milestone, but Mahmudullah ensured Bangladesh kept scoring well in the final overs. He hit a six off Van Beek and then a six and a four off Pringle. Shakib eventually reached fifty runs, marking his first half-century in his last 20 T20I matches. However, van Meekeren dismissed Mahmudullah, giving away only four runs in the 18th over. Despite this, there were five boundaries in the last two overs: Jaker Ali hit three off van Beek in the 19th over, and Shakib hit two off de Leede in the 20th over, scoring a total of 26 runs from those overs.
NETHERLANDS:
Initial overs: 36/2 [RR: 6.00, 4s/6s: 6/1]
Michael Levitt and Max O'Dowd helped the Netherlands start well in their attempt to chase the target. Levitt was aggressive, hitting 2 fours and a six in the first four overs. He got lucky surviving a close run-out but got out in the fifth over by slicing a catch to point off Taskin Ahmed. O'Dowd hit two fours but was caught out in the sixth over by Tanzim Hasan Sakib who caught a hard-hit ball. Engelbrecht finished the over with a four, but with the run rate at six, the Netherlands needed to work hard to win.
Middle overs: 75/3 [RR: 8.33, 4s/6s: 5/4]
Vikramjit Singh hit two sixes in one over off Shakib and another off Rishad Hossain. Engelbrecht helped him by scoring runs too, and together they made 37 runs quickly. But Vikramjit was out when he missed a ball from Mahmudullah in the 10th over. Scott Edwards hit a four in the same over, making the Netherlands' score 73/3, almost the same as Bangladesh at the same point. Engelbrecht hit a six and a four off Shakib, and Edwards kept scoring. But in the 15th over, Rishad got Engelbrecht and de Leede out quickly, keeping the game close.
Death Overs: 23/3 [RR: 4.60, 4s/6s: 1/1]
The Netherlands needed to score 49 runs from the last five overs. Shakib, a player from the opposing team, bowled a crucial over and only let the Netherlands score 5 runs in the 16th over. The coercion was soaring for the Netherlands' skipper, Edwards. He attempted to hit a tricky ball but ended up hitting it incorrectly. Mustafizur, a bowler from the other team, also bowled well and only let the Netherlands score 1 run in his over. Now, the Netherlands had a tough task: they needed to score 43 runs in just three overs. Rishad, another player, took out van Beek, a Netherlands player, from the game. Even though Dutt from the Netherlands hit a big shot and scored six runs, Rishad finished with good scores. With only two overs left, the Netherlands needed 36 runs. Sadly, they couldn't reach that goal. Mustafizur, the bowler, only allowed them to score 12 runs in his four overs of the match.
Score Summary:
Bangladesh scored 159 runs with 5 players out in 20 overs. Shakib Al Hasan made 64 runs, and Tanzid Hasan scored 35. They beat Netherlands, who scored 134 runs with 8 players out in 20 overs. Sybrand Engelbrecht scored 33 runs and Vikramjit Singh made 26. Bangladesh won by 25 runs.
