Shami, Bumrah and Yadav set for comeback after making India's Champions Trophy squad
Shami, Bumrah To Play India's Champions Trophy squad
India, placed in Group A, begin their Champions Trophy campaign against Bangladesh on February 20.
Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami, and Hardik Pandya are among the key names in India’s 15-man squad for the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy 2025, captained by Rohit Sharma with Shubman Gill as vice-captain. The squad, revealed on January 18, also includes young talent Yashasvi Jaiswal, who hasn’t made his debut in ODI.
Bumrah's selection depends on his full recovery from back spasms suffered during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, where he bowled 151.2 overs and took 32 wickets. He will miss the three-match ODI series against England before the Champions Trophy, with Harshit Rana stepping in as his replacement. Shami returns after recovering from Achilles tendon surgery, while Arshdeep Singh completes the pace trio. Mohammed Siraj has not been included.
Hardik Pandya gets his spot back as an all-rounder after recovering from an ankle injury that sidelined him during the second half of the 2023 World Cup. Ravindra Jadeja also makes a comeback to the ODI setup after 14 months, adding left-arm spin and batting depth. Axar Patel and Washington Sundar are the other all-rounders in the squad.
Kuldeep Yadav strengthens India’s spin department after recovering from hernia surgery. He has been absent since suffering a groin injury during the home series against New Zealand.
Yashasvi Jaiswal’s inclusion provides a left-handed option at the top of the order, alongside Shubman Gill, who boasts an impressive ODI average of 58.20. Jaiswal’s excellent List A record, with an average of 54 and a top score of 203, has secured him a spot in the squad. KL Rahul keeps his place as the primary wicketkeeper-batter after his strong World Cup performance, with Rishabh Pant serving as the second wicketkeeper.
India are in Group A alongside Pakistan, Bangladesh, and New Zealand. They begin their campaign against Bangladesh on February 20 at the Dubai International Stadium. As a build-up to the Champions Trophy, India will play three ODIs against England in Nagpur (February 6), Cuttack (February 9), and Ahmedabad (February 12).
The squad reflects a blend of experience and fresh talent as India eyes another ICC trophy.
