Shami set to make competitive cricket comeback in Ranji Trophy match against Madhya Pradesh
Mohammed Shami has not played since the ODI World Cup final last year.
Mohammed Shami the Indian fast bowler is all ready to return to play for the Indian team after taking a break of nearly a year as he has been announced in the squad of Bengal’s squad in the Ranji trophy that is gonna start from November 13. In Indore, Bengal will face off with Madhya Pradesh in which Shami is gonna take part after he last played ODI World Cup final with Australia last year in Ahmedabad.
Shami's fitness was being monitored closely as the Border-Gavaskar Trophy approaches, starting on November 22 in Perth. However, he was not included in the squad for the five-Test series. Just before the squad was announced, Shami mentioned he hoped to fly to Australia after playing a couple of Ranji Trophy matches for Bengal. Unfortunately, he can only play one red-ball game to show he's fit since the Ranji Trophy season is split into two parts, and there’s only one round left before the white-ball tournaments begin.
Shami had been out of action because of an ankle injury and had surgery on his right foot back in March this year. He spent most of the last six months at the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru, working on recovering from surgery for an Achilles tendon injury. During the ODI World Cup, he was the top wicket-taker, finishing with 24 wickets in seven matches at an average of 10.70. He also needed to recover from ankle swelling and a side strain.
If Shami shows that he's fit in the upcoming four-day match, there’s a chance he could be added to India's Test squad. This squad currently includes vice-captain Jasprit Bumrah and fast bowlers Mohammed Siraj, Akash Deep, Prasidh Krishna, and Harshit Rana, with Mukesh Kumar, Navdeep Saini, and Khaleel Ahmed in the reserves.
Shami was on track to return during the Bangladesh series at home in September and was also in line to play in the Duleep Trophy when he faced a setback. Rohit Sharma referred to this setback as a swelling on Shami's left knee, which delayed his recovery.
