Shannon Gabriel Announces Retirement from International Cricket
The 36-year-old West Indies bowler played 59 Tests, 25 ODIs and two T20Is picked a total of 202 wickets.
Shannon Gabriel the West Indies fast bowler has announced his retirement from International cricket, and with this, he is ending his career that he started in 2012. He is able to play 25 ODIs, 59 Tests and T20Is and picked up a total of 202 wickets at the age of 36.
He said “After committing myself to represent the West Indies in international cricket, I have found immense joy in playing this cherished sport at the highest level. However, as they say, all good things must come to an end. Therefore, I am officially announcing my retirement from international cricket today.”
First, I want to thank God for all the blessings and opportunities my family and I have received while playing for the West Indies. Second, I want to thank the administrators, coaches, and staff at Cricket West Indies for their hard work and support over the years. Lastly, I want to express my gratitude to my teammates and everyone who has supported me. I plan to keep playing for my country, Trinidad and Tobago, and for club and franchise teams worldwide with the same love and passion I've always had.
Gabriel is Good in Test cricket, he took use of his height and strength, particularly on difficult pitches. He achieved notable success in 2018 with match figures of 13 for 121 against Sri Lanka. His skill in delivering pace and bounce drew comparisons to West Indies legends Patrick Patterson and Ian Bishop by Courtney Walsh. Although it took some time for him to consistently harness these abilities, he became a regular team member by 2017. He contributed to significant victories such as the one against England at Headingley.
Another big moment in Gabriel’s career happened with the bat in Dominica. West Indies were nine wickets down against Pakistan, with only seven balls left to draw the Test and the series. Gabriel tried to hit a big shot but got bowled out. This was just 10 days after he was named Player of the Match for helping West Indies win a game.
In 2019, Gabriel got into trouble for making a homophobic comment to Joe Root and was banned for four ODIs. He accepted the punishment and apologized, but later said the incident was blown out of proportion.
Gabriel last played for West Indies in July 2023 but has been active in domestic cricket, playing for Trinidad and Tobago. He also played in the Abu Dhabi T10 league last year.
