Shikhar Dhawan shared his thoughts on retirement, saying, "To move forward in both a story and life, it's essential to turn the page. Therefore, I am announcing my retirement from international and domestic cricket. I've reminded myself not to feel sorrowful about not playing for India anymore, but to cherish the joy of having represented the country."
He has played his last game for India in the ODI which was against Bangladesh at Chattogram, in December 2022 meanwhile the last T20 was against Sri Lanka in July 2021. Any test match has not been played by him since 2018.
His last competitive appearance was for the Punjab Kings in IPL 2024 against the Sunrisers Hyderabad in April following which an injury ended his season prematurely. Shikhar Dhawan’s final competitive match was for the Punjab Kings in the IPL 2024, where they faced the Sunrisers Hyderabad in April. Unfortunately, an injury cut his season short.
By announcing retirement he thanked his family, and fans for showering love on him along with that he also thanked his childhood coaches and different IPL And Indian teams.
Shikhar Dhawan became well-known during the 2004 U-19 World Cup by scoring three centuries and totalling 505 runs. He played in a strong Delhi team with Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir. Famous for his strong offside shots, especially his elegant cover drives and cuts, Dhawan made his ODI debut for India in 2010 against Australia, but he was out for a duck in that game.
Three years later, in March 2013, Dhawan made his Test debut against Australia at Mohali. Unlike his ODI debut, this one was unforgettable as he scored the fastest century on debut in just 85 balls. Throughout 2013, he formed a strong opening partnership with Rohit Sharma and played a key role in India's Champions Trophy victory in England, scoring 363 runs and hitting two centuries.
Dhawan's 137 against South Africa at the MCG during the 2015 Cricket World Cup was one of his standout performances. He dominated bowlers like Morne Morkel, Dale Steyn, Wayne Parnell, and Vernon Philander, earning a reputation as a key player in ICC events. In the 2019 World Cup, he began strongly with a century against Australia, but a hairline fracture on his thumb forced him to miss the rest of the tournament.
In his 222 IPL matches, Shikhar Dhawan amassed 6,769 runs and won the championship with the Sunrisers Hyderabad in 2016, forming a crucial partnership with David Warner. However, as the decade progressed, his international appearances became less frequent.
Dhawan captained India in 15 matches (12 ODIs and 3 T20Is) and led 33 games for IPL teams Punjab Kings and Sunrisers Hyderabad, including the Champions League T20. As India's captain, he had a win-loss record of 8-5, with 2 no-results, and guided the team to ODI series victories against Sri Lanka in 2021, and West Indies and South Africa in 2022. However, in franchise cricket, he found the captaincy challenging, with a record of 13 wins and 20 losses.
