Shreyas Iyer named Punjab Kings captain for IPL 2025
Shreyas Iyer, the winning skipper of IPL 2024, has been appointed the captain of Punjab Kings for the upcoming IPL 2025.
One of the expensive IPL auction players Shreyas Iyer has been appointed as the Punjab Kings captain for the IPL 2025. This big announcement was made on the big Reality show Bigg Boss on Sunday night, where Iyer was invited as a Guest from the side of PBKS team-mates Yuzendra Chahal and Shashank Singh.
Stating his feelings Iyer said that “ he is really Honoured that the team has gained trust in him and is really looking forward to working with one and only Ricky Ponting the head coach. He added that the team is a mix of potential and proven performers and it looks great. And he wants to pay the faith back that has been shown by the management.
In terms of this Ricky Ponting the head coach of PBKS said that Iyer has the capabilities that will deliver results to the team. He has a great mind for the game. He has enjoyed his time in IPL, and he is looking forward to work with Iyer one more time. And with Iyer's leadership and talent, he assured that they assign a big win.
Shreyas Iyer, 30, is one of only eight captains to have won the IPL, a feat he achieved with Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) last year. He led KKR from 2022 to 2024. Punjab Kings (PBKS), who had the largest budget at the IPL 2025 mega auction, outbid Delhi Capitals (DC) to sign Iyer for INR 26.75 crore (around USD 3.18 million). For a short time, Iyer was the most expensive player in IPL history, until Lucknow Super Giants bought Rishabh Pant for INR 27 crore (around USD 3.21 million), setting a new record.
PBKS will be Iyer's third IPL team, after DC, where he debuted in 2015, and KKR. In 2018, DC made Iyer their captain midway through the season, and he led the team to the playoffs for three consecutive seasons, including a runners-up finish in 2020. Recently, he also captained Mumbai to a Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy title, finishing as the fourth-highest run-scorer in the tournament with 345 runs, including a century, in nine innings at a strike rate of 188.52 and an average above 49.
Shreyas Iyer will reunite with former Australia captain Ricky Ponting, who has been appointed head coach of Punjab Kings (PBKS) for the next four years. The two had a successful coach-captain partnership at Delhi Capitals (DC), which Ponting said was a big reason behind PBKS going all out to sign Iyer at the auction.
After the auction, Ponting hinted strongly that Iyer would likely be named captain. "I wanted to work with Shreyas," Ponting told Star Sports. "I've worked with him before, and he's a great guy and a great player. He'll be an excellent leader for our team if we choose him as captain, which I'm pretty sure we will. Plus, he led his team to the championship last year, so there's a lot to like about having him at Punjab."
