Shreyas Iyer to be absent for Mumbai's upcoming Ranji Trophy match
The right-handed batter needs rest for a week and will not travel to Agartala, where Mumbai will take on Tripura on 26th October.
Shreyas Iyer is trying to make a return to the national team, but he has run into a problem. He will not play in Mumbai's next Ranji Trophy match. According to sources from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), he needs to take at least a week off to rest, so he won’t be part of the upcoming game against Tripura.
Iyer played seven back-to-back multi-day games and recently talked about needing to rest his body, no matter what others think. He said, "I have to listen to my body because I know how much I've been through in the past few years. Based on that, I’ll make the right choice, and I hope my team will support me." He made this statement after scoring a century against Maharashtra.
As per the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA), it is confirmed that Iyer will not be on the Agartala tour, Mumbai will face Tripura starting November 26. The rest of the team will head to Agartala on Wednesday morning. The MCA isn't announcing any replacements since they named a 16-member squad on Monday.
Last year, Iyer had back surgery. Since coming back, he played in both the Asia Cup and the World Cup but lost his place on the Indian team. Recently, he shared his hope to make a national comeback. "I was feeling a bit down because of my injuries, but getting a century after so long feels amazing. I want to return, but as we say, focus on what you can control," he said after scoring a century against Maharashtra.
The Indian team will be going to Australia next month for a five-match Test series, and the squad is expected to be announced after the second Test against New Zealand ends on October 28. Right now, there aren’t any signs that Iyer will be in the mix in fact, he would likely have been chosen for the India A team if he were. However, you can never completely rule out a player with Iyer's skills, experience, and potential.
