Shubman Gill will play a domestic match during his Ranji Trophy return

Gill to Play Punjab's next Ranji Trophy match

Gill’s last appearance in the Ranji Trophy was against Madhya Pradesh in the 2022 season.

Shubman Gill is gonna play in the sixth round of the Ranji Trophy match for Punjab which was going to be against Karnataka at the M Chinnaswamy stadium starting from 23rd January in Bangalore. Well, the other squad hasn’t been announced yet.
This return will allow him to work with Wasim Jaffer who has become the highest run-achiever in Ranji history and has now been assigned as the coach of Punjab. This comes as his performance outside Asia has been under scrutiny, averaging 17.64 in 18 innings since June 2021. With India set to tour England for five Tests this summer, his returns have been questioned.
Along with Gill, there will be no other seniors such as Abhishek Sharma and Arshdeep Singh will not be available as both have been selected for India's T20I squad for the five-match series that was decided to happen against England starting from 22 January in Kolkata.
For Punjab, Gill appeared last for the Ranji Trophy in 2022, which was against Madhya Pradesh in Alur for the Quarter-finals. He’s returning just as the Indian team management has enforced strict protocols for national players. This follows India’s 3-1 Test series loss in Australia.
Head coach Gautam Gambhir and chief selector Ajit Agarkar have talked about the importance of top players being available to play for their state teams when they are not busy with international duties.
Gill had a tough time in Australia, scoring a highest of just 31 in five innings after recovering from a finger injury that kept him out of the first Test in Perth. He ended the series with an average of 18.60. He was also dropped from India's XI for the Boxing Day Test, with KL Rahul replacing him at No. 3 after Rohit Sharma moved back to the opening position, having initially played in the middle order in the second Test.
At that time, the team management clarified that Gill hadn’t been dropped, but was simply "unfortunate" to miss out due to the team combination. India chose to play with two spin-bowling allrounders, Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar, instead.
Punjab's chances of making it to the Ranji Trophy playoffs are slim; they are currently in fifth place in Group A, with just one win from five matches.
