Sri Lanka Secures Series Victory Over West Indies
The pair added 119 for the ninth wicket after West Indies were 58/8 at one stage.
Sri Lanka won the ODI series against the West Indies with a five-wicket victory in a rain-affected match in Pallekele. Wanindu Hasaranga took 4 wickets for 40 runs, Maheesh Theekshana 3 for 25, and Asitha Fernando 3 for 35, helping to bowl out the West Indies for 189 in a game that was shortened to 44 overs. Captain Charith Asalanka scored a half-century to secure the win with 5.4 overs remaining.
At one point in the match, it seemed like the West Indies might recover on a difficult pitch. They made a strong comeback, reaching 189 runs after being in trouble at 58/8. A key partnership of 119 runs between Sherfane Rutherford and Gudakesh Motie helped revive their innings and gave them a chance to compete.
After a rain delay set the match to 44 overs, the West Indies batted first but had a tough start. Alick Athanaze was bowled out early by Maheesh Theekshana. Asitha Fernando then took two quick wickets, getting Brandon King caught and bowled, and bowled Shai Hope in consecutive overs. Theekshana added to the trouble by bowling Keacy Carty, leaving the West Indies struggling at 31/4.
Wanindu Hasaranga made a big impact by taking out Roston Chase with a sharp googly and Romario Shepherd with a leg-break. He continued his success by getting Alzarri Joseph out with a quicker delivery. Meanwhile, Maheesh Theekshana bowled Hayden Walsh with a fastball, having impressive figures of 6 overs, 1 maiden, 16 runs, and 3 wickets, which left the West Indies struggling.
At that point, Sherfane Rutherford (80 runs off 82 balls) and Gudakesh Motie (50 not out off 61 balls) launched a fantastic comeback. Rutherford got a break when he was dropped twice and kept scoring with boundaries. Motie, usually known for bowling, played very well and reached his ODI fifty in 61 balls. Their partnership pulled the West Indies up from a tough spot to a total of over 100 runs.
Rutherford eventually got out when he flicked a full toss from Asitha Fernando to a fielder, and Hasaranga wrapped up the innings by bowling out Jayden Seales with another googly, finishing with 4 wickets for 40 runs. The West Indies were all out for 189 with eight overs remaining.
In response, Sri Lanka lost Avishka Fernando early to Alzarri Joseph, and soon after, Kusal Mendis was bowled by Motie. However, an important 62-run partnership between Nishan Madushka (38 runs) and Sadeera Samarawickrama (38 runs) helped them keep up with the target.
When both set batsmen got out – Madushka was bowled by a slow off-cutter from Joseph, and Samarawickrama misplayed a shot against Roston Chase – captain Charith Asalanka took charge, scoring quickly and leading his team to a solid 2-0 lead in the three-match series.
Sri Lanka 190/5 (Asalanka 62*, Joseph 2-30) beat West Indies 189/10(Rutherford 80, Motie 50, Hasaranga 4-40, Theekshana 3-25, Fernando 3-35) by 5 wickets.
