Sri Lanka Stuns India with a 32-Run Victory in Thrilling 2nd ODI

Sri Lanka Stuns India with a 32-Run Victory in Thrilling 2nd ODI

Vandersay six-for gives Sri Lanka first ODI win over India in three years. Sri Lanka goes up in the Series 1-0.

Sri Lanka played better than India in all parts of the game Yesterday. They chose to use an extra spin bowler and strengthened their batting, which was a good decision. With this win, they now lead the 3-match series and cannot lose it.
India has some issues to fix. They allowed Sri Lanka's lower-order batsmen to score well even after starting strong with their bowling. Also, India's middle-order batsmen struggled against spin in both matches, despite Rohit Sharma's quick starts. Maybe they are experimenting too much with the batting order. We'll see. And the man of the Match is going to run Jeffrey Vandersay.
Sri Lanka :
Initial Overs (1 to 15)
The start of the match was very interesting as Mohammad Siraj was able an instant impact by dismissing Nissanka for a duck on the very first ball with a catch to KL Rahul. Siraj kept the pressure on with a maiden over, while Arshdeep Singh’s first spell was less accurate, allowing Fernando to score a few runs. And like this Siraj's continued accuracy and a well-timed cover drive by Mendis were highlights of the next few overs.
Arshdeep struggled with his lines, giving up boundaries to Fernando. Siraj’s short deliveries caused some trouble, with Mendis pulling awkwardly but continuing after a brief injury scare. Axar Patel and Washington Sundar then took control with their spin, creating chances and keeping the scoring in check. Despite some cautious batting and occasional boundaries from Fernando and Mendis, the Indian bowlers effectively restrained the Sri Lankan innings with disciplined and varied attack strategies.
Middle Overs (16 To 30 )
Washington Sundar made a great impact with the ball. He got Avishka Fernando out for 40 with a simple return catch off a leading edge. Despite this, Fernando and Kusal Mendis had built a good partnership. Sundar then dismissed Kusal Mendis for 30 with an LBW after Mendis missed a sweep shot.
Axar Patel continued to use the conditions with his spin. He delivered a series of testing balls, including a ripper that spun sharply past the outside edge of Samarawickrama’s bat. On the other hand, Washington Sundar resumed his attack, claiming the vital wicket of Kusal Mendis, who was adjudged lbw for 30.
In Washington, Sundar managed to dismiss Samarawickrama, who was caught at short midwicket after attempting a big shot.
As well as Axar Patel continued his excellent spell, dismissing Samarawickrama and managing to keep the Sri Lankan batsmen under pressure.  Arshdeep Singh entered the attack and gave some respite for Sri Lanka with a few singles and a short ball that was pulled to fine leg.
Overall, the period from the 16th oversaw a flurry of wickets and tight bowling s from Sundar and Patel, who effectively stifled Sri Lanka's batting effort and took crucial wickets at pivotal moments.
Death Overs ( 31 to 49)
From the 31st over onwards, Arshdeep Singh and Washington Sundar played key roles for India. Arshdeep Singh’s over saw him tightly contesting Janith Liyanage, who managed only a single run after four consecutive dot balls. The over-highlighted Arshdeep's precision with full and short deliveries. In the 32nd over, Washington Sundar continued the pressure, dismissing Janith Liyanage with a caught-and-bowled and containing Asalanka with disciplined bowling, ending with a crucial maiden over.
Kuldeep Yadav made his impact from the 33rd over significant as he took the wicket of Janith Liyanage with a sharp catch off his own bowling. His effective spin and control helped him dismiss Wellalage and keep the pressure on the Sri Lankan lower order.
As the game approached its climax, the 46th over featured Kuldeep Yadav taking another important wicket by dismissing Wellalage with a catch by Shivam Dube. This period also saw some valuable runs from Sri Lanka's lower order, including a six by Wellalage and a reverse sweep by Kamindu Mendis.
The 49th over was critical as Arshdeep Singh’s exceptional fielding led to two key run-outs, dismissing Dananjaya and Kamindu Mendis. His accurate throws and Virat Kohli’s swift reactions ensured crucial run-outs, adding to the final over’s intensity.
India:
Initial Overs ( 1 To 15 )
Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill began the innings aggressively, with Rohit especially dominant, hitting multiple boundaries and a massive six. His aggressive approach saw him reach a well-compiled 64 before being dismissed by a spectacular catch from Nissanka off Vandersay’s bowling. After Rohit’s departure, Virat Kohli came to the crease and faced an early scare when he was initially adjudged lbw to Dananjaya. However, a successful review overturned the decision, much to the frustration of the Sri Lankan team.
Kohli made the most of his second chance by hitting a boundary off Dananjaya and adding important runs to the score. Throughout the middle overs, both Kohli and Gill maintained a steady scoring rate, rotating strikes and finding boundaries. Gill displayed finesse with his driving and placement, while Kohli contributed with both defensive and aggressive strokes. The partnership between Kohli and Gill was pivotal in stabilizing the innings, with Kohli’s experience complementing Gill’s technique. By the end of the 15th over, the Indian batting side had built a solid platform, positioning themselves well for the latter stages of the innings.
Middle Overs ( 16 To 30 )
Dananjaya troubled Kohli with a delivery that stayed low, leading to a possible dropped catch by the keeper. Kohli was unable to score off a full delivery and later mistimed a cover drive. Shubman Gill managed a single, while Kohli flicked a short delivery to mid-wicket and defended a flatter one.
Vandersay dismissed Shivam Dube lbw with a sharp leg-break, and then Shubman Gill was caught at slip by Kamindu Mendis off a thick edge. Kohli was also out lbw to a flipper, marking his second consecutive LBW to a spinner in ODIs.
Dananjaya had Axar Patel defending and scoring a boundary with a late cut. Axar also managed a couple of runs with a glance to fine leg and another defensive shot to cover. Vandersay got a wicket with a ball down the leg side for a four and then dismissed Kohli lbw with a flipper. Kohli's dismissal was confirmed after a review showed it was hitting the middle stump.
Dananjaya continued to bowl, with Axar Patel and Shreyas Iyer playing cautiously. Axar managed to push a delivery to long-on and attempted a cut shot but missed. Vandersay continued his strong performance in the 21st over, getting Shreyas Iyer lbw with a googly for his maiden ODI five-wicket haul. Vandersay's deliveries had the Indian batsmen in trouble throughout.
Asalanka took over in the 22nd, with Axar Patel hitting a series of boundaries and a six, including a slog-sweep and a lofted drive. Vandersay had Washington Sundar facing a no-ball and a free hit. Sundar's attempt to score was largely unsuccessful.
Asitha Fernando’s overs in the 24th and 25th were tightly bowled, but Axar and Sundar scored occasional runs. Kamindu Mendis and Dananjaya's later overs saw some resistance from the Indian tailenders, including well-timed shots from Axar Patel and Washington Sundar. Still, the Sri Lankan bowlers kept up the pressure. Axar hit a big six and some boundaries, contributing crucial runs in India's chase.
Death overs  ( 31 to 49 )
From the 31st over, the match reached a fever pitch as Sri Lanka's bowlers tightened their grip on the game. Asalanka’s bowling was very effective. He used a mix of accurate and spinning deliveries that troubled the Indian lower-order batsmen. He dismissed Axar Patel, who was caught and bowled after playing an early shot. Asalanka’s variations and disciplined bowling kept the pressure on, with key deliveries turning sharply and narrowly missing the edge of the bat.
At 32 overs, Dananjaya continued to trouble the Indian batsmen, notably with a leg break that beat Washington Sundar's defensive shot and eluded the stumps. Despite some resistance from Sundar, who managed to score a few runs, the pressure from Sri Lankan spinners was relentless.
The crucial breakthrough came in the 35th over when Asalanka dismissed Washington Sundar, who was adjudged lbw after a successful review. This dismissal was a turning point, as it left India with limited lower-order batting options.
By the 37th over, Asalanka’s spell had intensified, with deliveries that beat the bat and kept the batsmen on edge. He managed to bowl an unplayable delivery that spun sharply, leaving Kuldeep Yadav struggling. The pressure mounted as Kuldeep faced deliveries that spun past his outside edge, leading to crucial maidens.
The 40th over saw Arshdeep Singh come to the crease, attempting to add valuable runs. However, his efforts were prevented when Siraj was dismissed lbw by Asalanka, further reducing India's chances. Asalanka’s relentless bowling led to a considerable final phase where every run and wicket became pivotal.
In the final overs, Vandersay’s control and spin were key. His effective bowling in the 41st over, including a wide delivery and a tight over, ensured that the Indian batsmen found it hard to score freely.
As the 42nd over began, the match’s climax approached. Kuldeep Yadav faced Asalanka, and a crucial moment unfolded when a risky single attempt led to a run-out. The throw from the slip fielder to Kusal Mendis resulted in the dismissal of Arshdeep Singh, sealing Sri Lanka’s victory.
Sri Lanka’s win was marked by effective spin bowling and strategic fielding, particularly in the final overs, showcasing their ability to handle pressure and secure the win in a tightly contested match.
