Starc, Hazlewood dismissed India openers on the first morning in Perth Test

Mitchell Starc picked up the key wicket of KL Rahul in the first session for the hosts.

Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood picked two wickets each to rattle India on the first morning of the Perth Test as the visitors went to Lunch on 51 for 4. India lost three of the four wickets for very little, Yashasvi Jaiswal and Devdutt Padikkal fell for a duck each and Virat Kohli went out on 5 runs, but the biggest incision of the session was Starc taking out a determined KL Rahul, in a rather contentious dismissal.
For the first time in five Tests at the Optus Stadium, Australia didn't win the toss but Pat Cummins was admittedly unsure about what was the best thing to do on the surface. Jasprit Bumrah didn't hesitate to bat first but the top-order suffered early.
KL Rahul opening in Tests again in the absence of Rohit Sharma and did well to play inside the line of the ball against an incredibly accurate Hazlewood who was also getting the ball seam generously. Jaiswal however, got out by Starc into attempting a drive away from his body and nicked to Nathan McSweeney at gully for an eight-ball duck. Devdutt Padikkal, added to the main squad and thrown into the mix in place of the injured Shubman Gill. After a sustained period of survival, he edged a delivery from Hazlewood that seamed 1.39 degrees after pitching - the second most for the pacer in the session.
Virat Kohli walked out to massive anticipation, but only 12 balls as the extra bounce undid him. Hazlewood pulled his length back a touch and got one to rise on Kohli, who didn't quite anticipate it. He still fended at it and edged to Usman Khawaja at first slip to reduce India to 32 for 3. Rahul continued to keep his bat in check while defending and slowly grew in confidence as the session progressed. But he was left incensed by the third umpire's decision to overturn an on-field call for a caught-behind appeal that sent him packing.
Rishabh Pant kept his cool against Nathan Lyon, introduced in the last 15 minutes of the session. Dhruv Jurel survived a play-and-a-miss and a sliced shot over the populated cordon behind the stumps off Starc to take India to the break without further damage.
Brief Scores: India 150/10 at Tea (Rishabh Pant 37, Nitish Kumar Reddy : 41* Josh Hazlewood 4-29, Mitchell Marsh 2-12) vs Australia : 67/7
