Vaibhav Suryavanshi shined with his second consecutive half-century as India cruised into the Under-19 Asia Cup final, defeating Sri Lanka by seven wickets in Sharjah on Friday.
The 13-year-old, who recently became the youngest cricketer ever to be picked in an IPL auction, scored a blistering 67 off just 36 balls, hitting five sixes and six fours. India chased the target of 174 in just 23 balls, with 170 remaining deliveries.
India will now face Bangladesh in the final on Sunday at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium. Bangladesh advanced to the final after beating Pakistan by seven wickets, chasing down 117 in just 22.1 overs during the first semi-final.
Earlier, Sri Lanka struggled to build momentum after opting to bat first, managing only 173 runs in 46.2 overs. Lakvin Abeysinghe (69 off 110) and Sharujan Shanmuganathan (42 off 78) were the standout performers for their side. However, Indian bowlers dominated, with Chetan Sharma (3/34), Kiran Chormale (2/32), and Ayush Mhatre (2/37) delivering impressive spells to restrict Sri Lanka's score.
In the chase, Ayush Mhatre played a key role, scoring 34 off 28 balls and forming a strong opening partnership of 91 runs with Suryavanshi. The young left-hander launched India’s innings in style, smashing consecutive sixes and a boundary in Sigera's opening over, which went for 31 runs.
Though Mhatre fell to Vihas Thewmika, Suryavanshi kept the scoreboard moving with a steady partnership alongside C Andre Siddharth (22). Suryavanshi’s aggressive batting included two sixes off Aayan Khan, while captain Mohamed Amaan (25 not out) and KP Karthikeya (11 not out) sealed the win.
