Afghanistan gave Uganda a tough first game in the T20 World Cup cricket tournament. They played very well with both batting and bowling, winning by a huge margin of 125 runs. Rashid Khan's team showed they were strong in batting too, as the openers played excellently. Even though they slowed down at the end, their score of 183/5 was still too high for Uganda to beat. Fazalhaq Farooqi, a left-arm fast bowler, took five wickets and made history with one of the best bowling performances in men's T20 World Cup history, finishing with 5 wickets for just 9 runs.
For the winning side at what point did the game turn around?
At the time of Powerplay, Afghanistan’s Openers kicked off rapidly and took 5 wickets, defeating Uganda’s hopes of an unforgettable match.
Afghanistan:
Powerplay:
During their first World Cup cricket match, Uganda's bowlers faced a challenging start after their captain, Brian Masaba, chose to bowl.
Gurbaz’s willpower radiated as he shattered a six off Ramjani's second ball. The powerplay was enormous, with both Gurbaz and Zadran attacking Uganda's bowlers. Boundaries lavished and it finished with Gurbaz forged four fours in a row off Nakrani, enhancing Afghanistan to their best Powerplay score in T20 World Cups.
Middle overs:
The two Afghanistan openers ran well and scored quickly, getting more than 10 runs each over. By the ninth over, Gurbaz had made his 50 runs in just 28 balls, and by the 10th over, Afghanistan had reached 100 runs. Zadran also got his 50 runs in the 12th over, using 34 balls. Bilal Hassan, who had only bowled one over in the Powerplay, had a bad return, giving away 25 runs in one over, including five wide balls and a no-ball that went for four runs. Zadran hit a six and Gurbaz hit a four in this over. However, Masaba broke their partnership with his leg-spin when Zadran missed a big shot and got bowled out. Zadran left after scoring 70 runs from 46 balls, and the pair just missed breaking the record for the highest opening partnership in T20 World Cup history, which is 170 runs.
Death-overs:
One wicket led to another quickly. Gurbaz was out four balls later when he hit the ball to Riazat Ali Shah. Masaba got another wicket in the 17th over, catching Najibullah Zadran. Afghanistan started losing wickets quickly after their strong start. The middle-order batters struggled against Uganda's smart bowling. They didn't hit any fours or sixes during this time. Masaba took 2 wickets for 21 runs, and Cosmas Kyewuta took 2 wickets for 25 runs.
Uganda:
Powerplay:
Uganda opener Ronak Patel started strong by hitting the first ball for a four. But on the next ball, Fazalhaq Farooqi bowled him out. Roger Musaka was out on the first ball he faced, trapped leg before wicket. Simon Ssesazi hit a ball high in the air and was caught, leaving Uganda struggling at 8 for 3 in the second over. Things got worse for Uganda as Dinesh Nakrani and Alpesh Ramjani were also out, losing half their team quickly.
Middle overs:
Uganda struggled but managed to stop losing wickets for a while. Riazat Ali Shah and Robinson Obuya tried to rebuild the innings slowly from 18 for 5. Even though they stayed in for some time, the game was slipping away. Farooqi came back to bowl in the 13th over and nearly got a hat-trick. He bowled Riazat out with a slower ball and then got the captain Masaba caught behind. He missed the hat-trick but got Obuya out with another catch to Gurbaz, making it three wickets in the same over.
Death-overs:
Uganda managed to play against the Afghanistan leg-spinner Rashid for 22 balls, but Rashid took two wickets in his last two balls to secure a big win. First, Hassan missed a reverse sweep on a googly and was out leg before wicket. Then, Rashid bowled another googly that went through the #11 batter's bat and pad, hitting the stumps.
Summary of scores: Afghanistan scored 183/5 in 20 overs (Rahmanullah Gurbaz 76, Ibrahim Zadran 70; Brian Masaba 2-21, Cosmas Kyewuta 2-25) and beat Uganda, who scored 58 in 16 overs (Fazalhaq Farooqi 5-9, Naveen Ul Haq 2-4, Rashid Khan 2-12), by 125 runs.
