T20 World Cup 2024: Against the United States, India received five penalty runs. Here's why
The USA was penalized with five runs due to not delivering the next over in 60 seconds to India.
IND vs USA, T20 World Cup 2024: Team India finally continues their third winning strike while playing against the USA, who lost even after making the fightable total in their T20 World Cup match in New York on Wednesday. They got penalised with five penalty runs too in the match innings. The main reason for the penalty was that Team USA couldn’t bowl the next over within 60 seconds after finishing the earlier over.
ICC through a statement issued stated that” If the bowling team is unable to prepare to bowl the next over within 60 seconds from the time the last over has been completed the third time in an innings, the team will have to forego five runs.”
The on-field umpires warned USA’s stand-in skipper Aaron Jones twice for not following the stop-clock rule and when they committed the third offence, the umpires awarded five penalty runs to India.
Before this tournament, the ICC itself admitted that they would employ this rule in the tournament and in the T20Is in general and this has made the rule permanent in the white-ball cricketing format, which also encompasses the ODIs.

After having five runs given, the going got a little easier for the Rohit Sharma-led side as Suryakumar Yadav came up with a match-winning knock of fifty and aided the team for the third consecutive victory in this tournament.
Among the bowlers, Arshdeep Singh was chosen as the most successful one who took his career’s best bowling figures of 4/9 and so created a tremor in the American batting arsenal during the first innings. For the first time he got two wickets and then again, he got two wickets in the last over of the power play.
The Rohit Shara-led side has brought themselves into the Super 8 stage after winning three consecutive matches here. On the other hand, the USA will try everything within their power to get their way past Ireland and post a big score to get through to the Super 8.
