T20 World Cup 2024: "Cummins' Hat-Trick Seals Australia's Win"

T20 World Cup 2024: "Cummins' Hat-Trick Seals Australia's Win"

Australia did much better, hitting hard and making 59 runs without losing any players.

Pat Cummins took three wickets in a row, and David Warner scored a quick fifty, helping Australia win their match against Bangladesh. Despite some rain, Australia easily reached the target after Bangladesh scored 140/8. The rain stopped the game early, but Australia had already done enough to win using the DLS method.

How did the game come in favor of Australia?

Bangladesh had a hard time in the Powerplay, scoring only 8 runs at first and ending with 39, Australia did much better, hitting hard and making 59 runs without losing any players.

Bangladesh:

The Initial Overs - 39/1 (RR:6.5, 4/6s: 4/1)

Mitchell Starc bowled the ball three times and got Tanzim Hasan out when the ball hit the stumps. Then, Josh Hazlewood bowled six balls without giving any runs. In the first three overs, Bangladesh scored only 8 runs. To break this slow start, Najmul Shanto hit a big six against Hazlewood, and then Litton Das hit two boundaries off Starc. In the last three overs of the powerplay, Bangladesh scored 31 runs, but they still needed to score more.

The Middle Overs - 59/3 (RR:6.55, 4s/6s: 5/0)

After the powerplay, Shanto tried to score quickly with some boundaries off Adam Zampa and Marcus Stoinis. But Australia took back control. Litton missed a sweep and was bowled by Zampa. Glenn Maxwell took a wicket in his first over, dismissing Rishad Hossain. The spinners kept Bangladesh's batters from scoring freely, and the pressure led to Shanto losing his wicket too.

The Death Overs - 42/4 (RR: 8.4, 4s/6s:1/2)

Bangladesh needed at least sixty runs from their last five overs to challenge Australia. Towhid Hridoy and Shakib Al Hasan were on the field batting. Shakib got out, but Hridoy hit two sixes off Stoinis, giving hope. Then Cummins bowled, changed his speed, and took two wickets in a row. Taskin Ahmed scored some runs in the next over, but Hridoy had to finish strong. Cummins, on a hat-trick, bowled a slower ball, and Hridoy's shot was caught. This was only the second hat-trick by an Australian in a T20 World Cup. The first was by Brett Lee against Bangladesh. Hridoy's wicket was a big loss, and Bangladesh finished with a low score.

Australia:

The Initial Overs - 59/0 (RR: 9.83, 4s/6s: 5/4)

Australia played very aggressively right from the start. Travis Head and David Warner each hit a boundary in the first two overs. Then Warner hit a big six off Mahedi Hasan. Taskin’s first over was expensive, giving away 15 runs. Even Mustafizur Rahman’s good over ended badly as Head hit a four and a six. Warner finished the powerplay with another six, putting Australia in a strong position.

The Middle Overs - 41/2 (RR: 7.68, 4s/6s: 3/2)

Two balls after the powerplay, rain stopped the game. Australia was doing well, but the rain didn’t last long. When the game resumed, Bangladesh got some hope as Rishad took the wickets of Head and Mitchell Marsh rapidly. However, Warner and Maxwell dashed their hopes by hitting several boundaries. Warner hit a six to reach his fifty just before the rain made its way back, ending the game early.

Summary of Scores:

Bangladesh scored 140 runs for 8 wickets in 20 overs (Najmul Shanto 41, Towhid Hridoy 40; Pat Cummins took 3 wickets for 29 runs, Adam Zampa took 2 wickets for 24 runs). Australia scored 100 runs for 2 wickets in 11.2 overs (David Warner 53 not out, Travis Head 31) and won by 28 runs (DLS method).
