T20 World Cup 2024: England defeats Namibia, nears Super 8
England won the game in a pivotal match for their victory in T20 WC 2024.
The game started three hours later than planned, but to England's delight, it finally kicked off, with the reigning champions being put into bat in a match that was shortened to just 11 overs per team. Regardless of a rough beginning, a remarkable collaboration of 50 runs between Jonny Bairstow along Harry Brook moved England forward, and they secured the deal with a total of 122/5 in just 10 overs - with another over being cut short after a light dribble in the course of the match. Facing a target of 127 for a win (later adjusted according to DLS), Namibia was only able to score 84/3, as England won the game that was pivotal for their victory in T20 WC 2024.
England:
Initial Overs - 18/2 [RR: 6.00, 4s/6s: 3/0]
David Wiese bowled very well at the start, keeping the ball short and moving it away from Phil Salt and Jos Buttler, allowing just one run. Ruben Trumpelmann, a left-arm bowler, got Buttler out for zero runs in the second over. Namibia kept bowling short to Salt, who hit a bunch of boundaries but found it difficult to bat on a tricky pitch. Phil Salt was caught out by a knuckleball from Wiese Jonny Bairstow scored four runs from a slower ball from Wiese, but Namibia started aggressively, quickly dismissing players and limiting England's total.
Middle Overs - 64/1 [RR: 12.80, 4s/6s: 4/4]
Left-arm spinner Bernard Scholtz bowled well, thumping Bairstow's bat a few times. But Bairstow coped to hit a reverse sweep for four runs, accompanied by a six over long-on. In the same over, the wicketkeeper Zane Green dropped a catch, giving Bairstow another chance. In the next over, Namibia's captain Gerhard Erasmus gave away 10 runs, including a four by Bairstow. Harry Brook hit the first six of the match over midwicket off Jack Brassell, followed by a boundary behind point, taking England past 50 runs in the sixth over. Bairstow hit his first six with a shot past deep square leg. Erasmus failed to collect a throw that would have run Brook out. The fifty-run partnership came in 28 balls, but Scholtz ended it by getting Bairstow out with a top edge. Moeen Ali started strong, hitting a six-over long-on off Scholtz.
Death Overs - 40/2 [RR: 20.00, 4s/6s: 2/4]
A short rain shower caused a delay, making England's innings only 10 overs. Brook hit Brassell for two sets of two runs, then scooped a four, followed by a six, and another scooped four, scoring 19 runs in that over. In the final over, Moeen hit a six off Trumpelmann but was caught trying to hit another. Liam Livingstone hit a one-handed four over deep backward square leg and a six over long-on, helping England score 21 runs in the last over.
Namibia:
Initial Overs - 18/0 [RR: 6.00, 4s/6s: 1/1]
Reece Topley started by giving away only two runs in his first over, even though one was a no-ball. Michael van Lingen hit a four and a six off Jofra Archer in the second over, helping Namibia start their chase. Topley bowled well, allowing only four runs in his last over, as Namibia kept up with England's score.
Middle Overs - 53/1 [10.60, 4s/6s: 3/4]
In England's cricket match, they chose Sam Curran to add more bowling choices, not picking Will Jacks. Sam Curran began well but was hit for a four by Nikolaas Davin. Chris Jordan replaced Mark Wood and apart from one six hit by Davin, he bowled tightly, giving away only 10 runs. Adil Rashid, who played well in the last game, was hit for a six on the first ball he bowled to van Lingen, but he only conceded nine runs in total. Davin retired hurt, and Wiese came in, hitting a four off Curran but only seven runs came from that over. Wiese continued strongly, hitting two sixes and a four in one over from Rashid, leaving Namibia needing 56 runs from the last two overs to win.
Death Overs - 13/2 [6.50, 4s/6s: 0/1]
England did well by bringing in Jordan to bowl at the end of the match. He only gave away 9 runs and even got the wicket of van Lingen. This made it very hard for Namibia to win because they needed 46 runs from just one over. Archer also did a great job by getting the wicket of Wiese in the last over. The England captain and players congratulated him warmly. Namibia could only score 4 runs in the last over, and England won the match easily.
Summary of Scores:
England scored 122 runs with 5 players out in 10 turns. Harry Brook made 47 runs and Jonny Bairstow made 31 runs. Ruben Trumpelmann took 2 wickets for 31 runs. They won against Namibia who scored 84 runs with 3 players out in their 10 turns. Michael van Lingen made 33 runs and David Wiese made 27 runs. Jofra Archer took 1 wicket for 15 runs.
