T20 World Cup 2024: Rutherford secures a spot in the Super 8 for West Indies
The West Indies struggled with batting, but Sherfane Rutherford helped them reach 149 runs. New Zealand strived to bridge the gap but fell short by 13 runs.
The West Indies team made it to the Super 8 of the 2024 T20 World Cup after beating New Zealand in Trinidad. The West Indies struggled with batting, but Sherfane Rutherford helped them reach 149 runs. New Zealand strived to bridge the gap but fell short by 13 runs.
Where did West Indies win the game?
West Indies were not playing well with the bat. Their score was stuck and needed to improve. New Zealand was playing much better after losing badly to Afghanistan. But then Rutherford started hitting many sixes in the last few overs, surprising New Zealand. He made 68 runs without getting out, which made a big difference in the game. No other player, except Glenn Phillips, scored even half of what Rutherford did.
West Indies:
Initial Overs: 23/4 (RR: 5.75, 4s/6s: 3/0)
Trent Boult struck early again in the game’s first over. He’s known for doing this often in his career. This time, Johnson Charles hit the ball with his bat, but it went straight into the stumps, so Boult didn’t need to do anything special. Nicholas Pooran struggled to score a bunch of runs while the fielding rules were relaxed, but Tim Southee, who arrived back to the squad, got him knocked out with a short ball. Southee also pulled out Rovman Powell, the team skipper, which caused more difficulties for the West Indies.
In between these two expulsions, Roston Chase hit the ball at the inexact time, and Lockie Ferguson seized it. This was indeed a powerful beginning for New Zealand, which was feeling the pressure to perform well.
Middle Overs: 68/3 (RR: 7.55, 4s/6s - 2/5)
James Neesham took a wicket for New Zealand, making it hard for the West Indies. They were battling at 30/5. To try and score more runs Akeal Hosein hit a six, but the West Indies only arrived at 49 runs halfway through. Even Andre Russell's short play didn't enhance their score. New Zealand brought back Boult, who got Andre Russell out. Rutherford was hitting sixes, but New Zealand required him to do something extraordinary in the last five overs to get a good score.
Death Overs: 58/2 (RR: 11.6, 4s/6s - 3/5)
From 30 runs in 5 wickets, West Indies made it difficult for New Zealand by setting a target of 150 runs, mostly because of one player named Rutherford. He played extremely well towards the end of their batting turn, hitting many boundaries. New Zealand’s main bowlers finished early, so their skipper Kane Williamson asked Daryl Mitchell and Mitchell Santner to bowl. Rutherford took full advantage of this and scored 37 runs rapidly.
New Zealand:
Initial Overs: 36/2 (RR: 6, 4s/6s - 3/1)
New Zealand hoped for a better beginning after Rutherford’s good play. Finn Allen started well with a four and a six, but Devon Conway got out trying to sweep on a bumpy field. Alzarri Joseph then bowled in the last over of the powerplay and got Allen out with a short ball, which pleased the home crowd.
Middle Overs: 49/3 (RR: 5.44, 4s/6s - 1/2)
Gudakesh Motie bowled brilliantly after the first part of the game and took three wickets quickly. Kane Williamson got out trying to cut the ball but edged it instead. Rachin Ravindra hit the ball straight to a fielder at deep midwicket. Motie got his third wicket by bowling a tricky ball that turned sharply and hit the stumps. New Zealand was struggling at 63 runs with 5 wickets down, making it hard for them to recover.
Death Overs: 51/4 (RR: 10.2, 4s/6s - 3/5)
New Zealand needed someone like Rutherford to save them at the end of the game. They were hoping Phillips could do it but losing Neesham on the first ball of the 16th over made things harder. Phillips hit some good shots, but New Zealand was always behind in the game. Then Joseph took two wickets in two balls, including Phillips', which ended New Zealand's chances. He ended with 4 wickets for 19 runs. They needed 33 runs in the last over, and Santner hit two sixes at the start, giving hope. But Romario Shepherd managed to stop them from winning.
Summary of Scores:
"The West Indies scored 149 runs in their 20 overs, with Sherfane Rutherford making 68 not out. New Zealand managed 136 runs in response, with Alzarri Joseph taking 4 wickets for 19 runs. The West Indies won by 13 runs."
