T20 World Cup 2024: Southee and Boult elevated New Zealand to Victory

T20 World Cup 2024: Southee and Boult elevated New Zealand to Victory

Trent Boult and Tim Southee did great at the start. Boult established the momentum with a double-wicket opening spell

Tim Southee got 3 runs out of 4 wickets and Trent Boult got 2 runs out of 7wickets, helping New Zealand to win against Uganda in Trinidad. They bowled well at the start, and Uganda ended up scoring very less runs, which is one of the lowest ever in the T20 World Cup games. After that New Zealand easily chased the target and won the game by nine wickets, even though Fin Allen got out early in their batting turn.
Where did they conquer the game?
During the game, Trent Boult and Tim Southee did great at the start. Boult established the momentum with a double-wicket opening spell, and Southee continued the impressive performance with consistent strikes. Mitchell Santner, Rachin Ravindra, and Lockie Ferguson also did well and got some wickets too.
Uganda:
Initial Overs: 9/3 (RR: 1.50; 4s/6s: 1/10)
In just three deliveries, Boult regained his spark, successfully trapping Simon Ssesazi with his renowned inswinger, followed by a left-arm pacer who then smacked Robinson Obuya with a well-placed sharp inswinger. Southee's moment of brilliance came after his second over, as he snagged Alpesh Ramjani off the shuffle, resulting in a left-hander LBW. Ronak Patel and Kenneth Waiswa managed to hold off the opposition for the rest of the powerplay, but the number of runs was minimal, with both batsmen struggling against the fast-moving ball.
Middle Overs: 20/4 (RR: 2.22; 4s/6s: 1/10)
The moment spin was introduced right after the powerplay concluded, Patel's frantic fightback came to an abrupt halt as Mitchell Santner seized the opportunity to strike and discover the crack, quickly caught off guard by Devon Conway. The following over, Lockie Ferguson's debut was marked by Waiswa's departure as he was overwhelmed by sheer speed. Should the early overs be seen as a test of seam and swing, the latter part witnessed a sufficient amount of turn and additional bounce, challenging Uganda's novice batters. The optional use of Rachin Ravindra managed to secure two wickets as the innings dragged on without any signs of progress.
Death Overs: 11/3 (RR: 3.01; 4s/6s: 1/0)
Tim Southee came back strongly at the end of the game and got two players out in just two balls. He almost got a hat trick but missed it by one player. The first player he got out was Fred Achelam, who had scored the most runs for Uganda in the game. After Southee’s twin strikes, Santner came back to finish off the game with just eight balls left.
New Zealand:
Powerplay: 41/1 (RR: 7.69; 4s/6s: 5/0)
Australia and England finished their matches rapidly, but New Zealand took more time to win theirs. Uganda’s bowlers did a good job, even though Fin Allen got out in a tricky way. Devon Conway hit some powerful shots on both sides of the field and finished the game strongly with several boundaries in a row.
Summary Of Scores:
Uganda finished 39th in the rankings, losing to New Zealand by a significant margin. They outperformed in 18.4 overs, with Tim Southee and Trent Boult proportionately contributing the most with 3 and 2 wickets. Whereas, New Zealand dominated with a score of 41/1, winning by nine wickets. Scoring 22 runs, Devon Conway was the standout performer for New Zealand.
