Tomar's Ton and Youngsters' Brilliance Propel Rajasthan and Haryana into Quarterfinals

Tomar's Ton and Youngsters' Brilliance Propel Rajasthan and Haryana into Quarterfinals

Haryana will now face Gujarat in the quarterfinals on January 12 in Vadodara.

Spinner Varun Chakravarthy made a strong case for his selection in India’s ODI squad with his second five-wicket haul in the Vijay Hazare Trophy. However, his efforts couldn’t stop Rajasthan from knocking Tamil Nadu out in the pre-quarterfinals.
Varun ended the tournament as the top wicket-taker, claiming 18 wickets in six matches. Despite his star performance, the match's standout effort came from Rajasthan opener Abhijeet Tomar, who scored 111 runs in the first innings, setting up a 19-run win for his team. Rajasthan will now face Vidarbha in the quarterfinals on January 12.
After being put into bat, Rajasthan was aiming at 182 for 1 in the 32nd over and seemed set for a 300-plus total. However, Varun changed the game with three quick wickets. He bowled Mahipal Lomror for 60 with a wrong'un, which drifted in and hit the top of the off stump. Next, he dismissed Deepak Hooda with a carrom ball and later sent centurion Tomar back to the pavilion for 111 off 125 balls. Varun finished with impressive figures of 5 for 52 in nine overs.
Rajasthan lost their last nine wickets for just 83 runs, getting bowled out for 267 in 47.3 overs. Left-arm spinner R Sai Kishore and seamer Sandeep Warrier claimed two wickets each for Tamil Nadu.
Tamil Nadu started their chase strongly, with a quick opening stand of 60 runs in 6.5 overs. Khaleel Ahmed then removed Tushar Raheja for 11. N Jagadeesan kept the momentum going, smashing six boundaries in an over that cost Rajasthan 29 runs, including five wides. He scored a brisk 65 off 52 balls but his dismissal triggered a collapse.
B Indrajith and Vijay Shankar tried to steady the innings. At the start of the 36th over, Tamil Nadu needed 83 runs with five wickets in hand. However, a crucial run-out of S Mohammed Ali, who scored 34 off 34 balls, shifted the game in Rajasthan's favour.
Fast bowler Aman Shekhawat delivered crucial blows, dismissing Indrajith, bowling Vijay Shankar for 49, and sealing the game by removing Varun for 18. Shekhawat finished with figures of 3 for 60 as Rajasthan bowled Tamil Nadu out for 248 in 47.1 overs, securing a spot in the final eight.
Parth Vats, the 20-year-old leg spin allrounder picked by Haryana over Yuzvendra Chahal, starred with both bat and ball in a 72-run win against Bengal, which secured Haryana's place in the quarterfinals of the Vijay Hazare Trophy.
In his first season in List A cricket, Vats helped Haryana recover from a challenging 98 for 3 in the 17th over. He scored 62 off 77 balls and formed an 84-run partnership for the fourth wicket with Nishant Sindhu, another 20-year-old allrounder, who made 64 and also contributed with the ball.
Key lower-order contributions, including an unbeaten 41 off 32 balls from Sumit Kumar and 29 from Rahul Tewatia, powered Haryana to a total of 298 for 9.
Mohammed Shami, who is aiming for a return to the Indian team if he can stay fit, had a mixed performance. His first spell was off-target, giving away 27 runs in three overs without a wicket. However, he returned strongly to finish with 3 for 61 in ten overs, including two wickets in the final overs as Haryana looked to accelerate.
Abhimanyu Easwaran, a player who has been in the national team mix, was key to Bengal’s chase. He got a chance to guide the innings after openers Sudip Gharami and Abishek Porel put on 70 for the first wicket. However, having spent two months on India's Test bench in Australia, Easwaran showed signs of rustiness. After surviving a close stumping appeal, he tried to break free with a series of reverse sweeps, but the pressure built up, and he was out attempting a slog sweep against mystery spinner Amit Rana.
Porel kept Bengal in the hunt with a half-century, scoring 57 off 78 balls, though he played cautiously for most of his innings. His dismissal in the 28th overexposed Bengal's weak middle order. Vats then dismissed Anustup Majumdar, Karan Lal, and Shami to help Haryana bowl Bengal out for 226 in 43.1 overs.
