Travis Head's power inning, Australia make winning start in England

Head hit eight boundaries and four sixes in his 23-balls 59 runs.

Travis Head made a valuable 59 and leg-spinner Adam Zampa took two cheap wickets as Australia beat England by 28 runs in the first T20 international at Southampton, on Wednesday. Opening batsman Head's quickfire innings was the cornerstone of Australia's seemingly below-par 179 all out. But with Zampa taking an economical 2-20 in a match where England's slow bowlers also impressed, it was more than enough as the hosts were dismissed for 151 to leave Australia 1-0 up in a three-match series.
Australia in Powerplay 86/1 in 6 overs
The most productive period for the batters came in the Powerplay after Australia was put into bat. After a fairly watchful start, yielding 11 runs in the first nine deliveries, Matthew Short cut loose, taking Reece Topley for consecutive sixes. The most productive of the overs in that period was the fifth when Head, who had made a fairly slow start with three runs in six balls, went after Sam Curran and hammered three sixes and as many fours in a 30-run over as Australia cruised to 86 in the powerplay. That said, the southpaw eventually fell off the last delivery of the phase.
As at the end of innings Australia 179 in 19.3 overs (Travis Head 59, Matthew Short 41; Liam Livingstone 3-22, Saqib Mahmood 2-21)
England attempted to be on the offensive much like Australia, but didn't get the desired results. Barring the fourth over in which Jordan Cox and Phil Salt combined to hit four boundaries off Josh Hazlewood, it largely remained a phase where the Australian bowlers could impose themselves. After dismissing Will Jacks in the second over, they could have almost had the wicket Cox too, but Barlett dropped a return chance. Nonetheless, his stay didn't last too long, as he along with Salt were both dismissed in the Powerplay.
Livingstone brings England back, again in Middle Over. Much like it was with their bowling performance, England put up an improved act in the middle overs with the bat as well. Yet again, it was largely due to the efforts of Livingstone, who smashed a 27-ball 37.
Australia clean up the tail in Death Overs. England were all out on 151 in 19.2 overs with the efforts of Liam Livingstone 37. Australia beat England by 28 runs.
