Travis Head to open the batting in first Test against Sri Lanka
Travis Head is ready for the Test series as an opener batsman against Sri Lanka.
Travis Head has been decided to be the opening partner of Usman Khawaja against Sri Lanka for the first test match in Galle. Khawaja was first paired with Nathan McSweeney and then with Sam Konstas during their last Test series against India at home.
But now for their other Subcontinent tour, they are using their famous formula that works in the 2023 India tour along with that they will be thinking about making their batting order flexible for the upcoming test cricket.
“Head played very well in India against the new ball. He immediately made the spinners feel the pressure, and we know he handles seam bowling well too if they bring it," Steve Smith said the day before the match. "It’s going to be exciting to watch him."
Although Smith hasn’t announced the final squad yet and asking to wait and watch the entire conditions after that he would be able to say any word. "We'll see what the conditions are like, probably in the morning before the game, and then we'll decide from there. Things can change fast around here, and the sun hasn't been shining much. So we'll check the pitch again, and then we'll announce the team at the toss," he said.
Australia might skip playing the 19-year-old Konstas, even though he showed early promise. Smith highlighted the benefits of keeping him in the team: "He'll get a lot of practice here, even if he doesn't play. I remember in 2013 when I didn't play the first few tests, I spent a lot of time hitting balls in the nets, which helped me improve my skills. So, whether he plays or not, this experience will be great for him. He'll learn a lot."
Smith also shared that he's fully recovered from the elbow injury he sustained during the Big Bash League: "It was mainly muscle damage and healed quickly. I'm now batting without tape," he confirmed.
Left-arm spinner Matthew Kuhnemann has also recovered from his injury and is ready to play. "The surgeon did an amazing job. We were surprised to see him field and perform so well recently. Either he's a great actor or has a high pain tolerance. He's fit to go," said Smith.
