Verreynne and Mulder score fifties to increase South Africa's lead on the second morning
Bangladesh were reduced to 19 for 2 at Tea on Day 2 after South Africa posted 308 to finish with a lead of 202
On the first evening, every ball was troubling to South Africa’s batter as most of the ball seemed to turn. But all thanks to Kyle Verreynne and Wiaan Mulder who has easily made 32 runs to head without any other wicket and survived on day 1. Now here comes the second day when the pitch was totally fine for the Batting. Verreynne and Mulder played well against Bangladesh’s spinner and were able to take the seventh wicket and decide at 119 runs.
Even with the danger of three spinners, it was Hasan Mahmud's fast bowling and reverse swing that gave Bangladesh their only two wickets of the session. By lunch, South Africa had already built a 137-run lead, with Verreynne not out on 77.
On the second Bangladesh started with Taijul Islam and Mahmud’s bowling. But for the left-arm spinner, there were almost no turns left as Verreynne was aiming against Mahmud, After nudging for three in the second over, he clips and drives for boundaries two overs later.
In the next over, the 46th, Taijul had Mulder pushing at the ball, but the outside edge fell short of slip. This was partly because Mulder was playing with soft hands and partly due to the slow surface. Mulder and Verreynne adapted well to the pitch and calmly handled both Taijul and offspinner, Nayeem Hasan.
Both batters effectively used the sweep and reverse sweep shots, even though Nayeem turned the ball sharply at times. They managed this by stepping forward to meet the deliveries, and once settled, they confidently dispatched the ball. Verreynne and Mulder played the sweep or reverse sweep off 28 balls against Taijul, Nayeem, and Mehidy Hasan Miraz on the second morning, scoring 45 runs, including seven boundaries.
To stop the batters from easily taking singles off the sweep, Bangladesh positioned a player close in at square leg. Still, Verreynne reached fifty by hitting a ball right to that fielder. Mulder achieved his first Test half-century at the start of the 64th over, cutting Nayeem for four behind point.
Just before that, Najmul Hossain Shanto had brought Mahmud back into the attack, and in the following over, Mahmud struck twice in quick succession. First, he bowled a back-of-a-length delivery outside off that held its line. Mulder attempted a punch but edged it to wide slip, ending his innings at 54. On the next ball, Mahmud bowled fuller, reversing the ball into Keshav Maharaj and knocking over his off stump.
Despite this, Verreynne remained unbeaten as they headed into the lunch break, with No. 10 Dane Piedt defending and pushing at the other end.
