Verreynne century and Rabada double-strike Made Bangladesh Struggle
Kagiso Rabada had removed overnight batters Mahmudul Hasan Joy and Mushfiqur Rahim in the fourth over of the morning.
Seven balls after using the light meter for the first time on day two, the umpires stopped play due to poor light. While that felt a bit sudden, a third-umpire decision that took a while to come through added some drama to what ended up being the final delivery of the day.
Mahmudul Hasan Joy, who was on 38 runs, stepped out of the crease to face Dane Piedt but missed the ball with a big swing. The ball bounced quite a bit, and wicketkeeper Kyle Verreynne quickly collected it and removed the bails. After looking at several replays, the TV umpire decided Mahmudul was not out. Although his bat was behind the line, it seemed to come off the ground after touching it, which was very close. Verreynne's reaction showed just how tight the call was.
The day was Verreynne's, as he scored his second Test century in the afternoon. Along with Wiaan Mulder's first half-century and Piedt's strong batting from No. 10, South Africa managed to reach 308, even after being in trouble at 108 for 6. With a lead of 202 runs from the first innings, Kagiso Rabada took two wickets early in the second innings, leaving Bangladesh at 4 for 2. However, Mahmudul, Najmul Hossain Shanto, and Mushfiqur Rahim fought back.
Shadman Islam and Mominul Haque both got out for low scores in the first four overs for the second day in a row. Rabada bowled with a lot of speed and bounced using the new ball. He took Shadman's wicket when a ball nipped in, leading to an inside edge that was caught by Tony de Zorzi at short leg. Just a few balls later, Mominul tried to defend but edged it to third slip, where Mulder made a good catch.
Mahmudul and Shanto put together a brief partnership of 55 runs before Keshav Maharaj got Shanto out. Maharaj bowled a full delivery that turned in from outside off, hitting Shanto on his back leg, which was moving toward off.
Mushfiqur then scored a quick 31 runs off 26 balls in an unbroken 42-run stand with Mahmudul, helping to prevent further damage. However, Bangladesh still finished the day 101 runs behind South Africa.
Shadman Islam and Mominul Haque fell for single-digit scores within the first four overs for the second time in as many days, as Rabada extracted plenty of pace and bounce with the new ball. His wickets came off back-of-a-length deliveries. In the third over, he got one to nip into Shadman, who inside-edged to short leg, where Tony de Zorzi took a sharp catch to his left. Three balls later, Mominul went defending but got an outside edge to third slip, where Mulder went low to grab a dipping ball.
Mahmudul and Shanto added 55 to rebuild briefly before Keshav Maharaj trapped Shanto in front. Maharaj got a full delivery to turn in from outside off, and Shanto, who had opened his stance up in looking to defend, was struck on his back leg, which was dragging off.
Mushfiqur then hit an entertaining 31 off 26 deliveries in an unbroken stand of 42 with Mahmudul to ensure there was no further damage, although Bangladesh still ended the day 101 runs behind South Africa.
Taijul had Mulder poking at the ball, but his outside edge fell short of slip. This happened partly because Mulder was playing gently and the pitch was slow. Mulder and Verreynne adjusted well to the conditions and handled Taijul and Nayeem's spin effectively.
Both batters used the sweep and reverse sweep shots skillfully, even though Nayeem turned the ball quite a bit at times. They moved forward to meet the ball and played their shots confidently. On the second morning, they played 38 sweeps or reverse sweeps against spin, scoring 59 runs, including seven boundaries and a six.
Bangladesh placed a fielder close in at square leg to stop easy runs from the sweep shot, but Verreynne still reached his half-century with a well-placed shot. Mulder followed by getting his half-century at the start of the 64th over when he cut Nayeem for a four behind point.
Shanto then brought Mahmud back into the attack, and he quickly took two wickets. First, he delivered a back-of-a-length ball outside off, which Mulder edged to wide slip. On the next ball, Mahmud bowled fuller and reversed the ball into Maharaj, knocking out the off stump.
However, Piedt, who came in next, not only stopped Mahmud from getting a hat trick but also frustrated Bangladesh further.
