Washington, Gill, and Siraj lead GT to their third win in a row

Washington, Gill, and Siraj lead GT to their third win in a row

Mohammed Siraj's career-best Indian Premier League figures led Gujarat Titans to a seven-wicket victory over Sunrisers Hyderabad on Sunday.

Sunrisers Hyderabad continued to struggle as they faced their fourth loss in a row this season, with two of those defeats happening at home. On the other hand, Gujarat Titans celebrated their third consecutive win with a solid seven-wicket victory.
On a tricky pitch where scoring runs was difficult, SRH managed to reach a total of over 150 runs but struggled again when bowling. Washington Sundar, who played his first match of the season, turned out to be a great choice batting at No. 4. He and Shubman Gill teamed up to score 90 runs for the third wicket.
Where the match was won
In the middle overs, Washington began GT's comeback in the sixth over. He and Shubman Gill performed well during this phase, making it hard for SRH to win. Pat Cummins tried to lead his team to victory twice that day—first with his batting and then by bowling in the PowerPlay. However, this pair from GT managed to counter his efforts in the middle overs.
Sunrisers Hyderabad
The Sunrisers faced a dry pitch at home, making it tough to hit the ball well. They learned this the hard way, losing both Travis Head to Siraj in the first over and Abhishek Sharma to Siraj again in the fifth over. Before Abhishek got out, he was able to score some runs against a struggling Ishant Sharma, but then Siraj got him out too. By the end of the PowerPlay, Ishan Kishan and Nitish Reddy helped the team reach a score of 45/2, which is the team's second-lowest score during this stage since 2024.
Middle-overs:
The rut continued during this phase as Kishan struggled with a short ball from Prasidh Krishna, leading to his dismissal for 17, caught at backward square leg in the eighth over. It wasn't until the 11th over that Nitish played a premeditated reverse sweep off Rashid Khan and finally secured the first four of the SRH innings, which took an astonishing 36 deliveries to achieve. While Sai Kishore kept a tight grip from one end, Nitish and Klaasen began to target Rashid, who was off to a rocky start this season. Klaasen then struck the first six of the innings in the 13th over off Rashid, with the leg-spinner ending his spell with unsatisfying figures of 0/31 in four overs. Just as Klaasen was finding his rhythm, Sai Kishore put a halt to his innings by cleaning him up with an arm ball.
Death overs:
Sai Kishore continued to make an impact, dismissing Nitish and concluding with outstanding figures of 2 for 24. Siraj made a comeback to attempt to thwart SRH's late rally by trapping Aniket Verma leg before wicket and then bowling Simarjeet Singh out with reverse swing, wrapping up his spell with impressive figures of 4-17, including a remarkable 17 dot balls. A quick cameo from Pat Cummins, scoring 22 off 9, along with a 17-run 20th over from Ishant, helped SRH finish with a challenging total of 152/8 on a pitch that clearly posed difficulties for batting.
Gujarat Titans
Pat Cummins and Mohammed Shami started well, but the last over from Simarjeet Singh changed things. Washington took advantage of his short deliveries, hitting two fours and two sixes in a 20-run over. Earlier, Shami dismissed Sai Sudharsan for just five runs, and Cummins managed to get Jos Buttler out for a duck on his third ball. Gujarat Titans moved Washington up to bat at No. 4, and he made an immediate impact.
Middle-overs
The third-wicket partnership kept the momentum going during the late PowerPlay, preventing SRH from getting back into the game. None of Cummins's bowlers had the same impact as he did at the start. Gill and Washington built a strong partnership that pulled the match away from the home team. Leg spinner Zeeshan Ansari bowled three overs, giving away 22 runs, but couldn't take any wickets, and Kamindu Mendis was hit hard, conceding 12 runs in one over. Cummins returned to bowl in the 11th over, desperately trying to take a wicket, but then Gill played an amazing cover drive. Washington's great innings ended due to a close call from the third umpire after Aniket made a diving catch at deep point. With no other bowling options left, Cummins turned to Abhishek Sharma's left-arm spin. However, he bowled to left-handed Sherfane Rutherford, who quickly hit him for four fours in the over, leaving GT with just 23 runs to win.
Death-overs
SRH switched the ball for the final overs, and Ansari came back to bowl. Gill then struck two fours by sweeping the ball behind square leg and hitting it over extra cover. Rutherford also smashed one of Cummins' deliveries out of the stadium and followed it up with another four before Gill scored the winning run.
