Zaheer Khan in Talks to Join Lucknow Super Giants as Mentor, Potentially Replacing Key Figures
Zaheer Khan is in negotiations with Lucknow Super Giants for the mentor role in Indian Premier League franchise.
There are discussions going on with Lucknow Super Giants regarding Zehar Khan’s mentor role. He might be able to replace the two prominent figures if anything fruitful comes to an end in the Northern Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise.
Since Gautam Gambhir left for Kolkatta in 2023 there is no mentor left in the Super Giants and there is a vacancy opened in the with Morne Morkel's departure. Both Gambhir and Morkel, who have been the bowling coach for three seasons, have either already joined or are about to join the Indian national team.
As per the sources it has been find out that Zaheer has been for the Role that previously Gambhir hold and might be providing the expertise to the Lucknow Gaint’s Bowlers. He will also serve as a crucial intermediary, acting as a bridge between the players and the management of the franchise, whose owner is known for being very passionate about the game.
Zaheer was previously considered for the role of bowling coach under Gambhir's new setup in Team India, where he would mentor young and upcoming fast bowlers—a role he is highly respected for. Even during his playing days, Zaheer was known for guiding and mentoring the young fast bowlers in the Indian team.
Zaheer Khan didn't get the role with the Indian team because the BCCI, probably on Gambhir's advice, picked Morkel instead. However, Zaheer has a lot of coaching experience from the IPL, having worked with the Mumbai Indians before.
In the Lucknow Super Giants setup, Zaheer will work alongside head coach Justin Langer and a talented coaching team that includes Adam Voges, Lance Klusener, and Jonty Rhodes. There are also rumors of another well-known coach joining the Sanjiv Goenka-owned franchise, but the details are still unclear.
Zaheer is managed to play 42 matches, 92 Tests as well as 200 ODIs and 17 T20I For India and not only that there are also 100 IPL Games are involved into it in which he represents Royal Challengers Bangalore (now Royal Challengers Bengaluru), Mumbai Indians and Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals) and last he played his game in 2017.
LSG is one of the expensive team that is brought in IPL in 2022 and costs over a billion dollar is able to go through to the top-four stage in the starting two seasons before it misses the playoff spot previous year because of the inferior Net Run rate.
Meanwhile, there is possibility that BCCI will announce the retention rules by the end of this month. Teams are expected to be allowed around six retentions, including the Right to Match (RTM) option. Despite some franchises wanting to end the Big Auction, the BCCI doesn't plan to eliminate it, at least for now.
