Zaheer Khan to Mentor LSG in IPL 2025
Zaheer Khan is set to join Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) as their mentor role after Gautam era.
Zaheer Khan will be filling the position of mentor at Lucknow Super Giants as the Gautam Gambhir left in 2023 now he is going to get this position. Gambhir is in the head coach position at Kolkata Knight Riders for IPL 2024 along with the head coach of India’s men's team.
This is not confirmed yet if he also is going to perform the role of LSG’s bowling coach as Morne Morkel has also left the franchise and has joined with Indian team coaching staff.
By the period of 2018 to 2022 Zaheer was in the Mumbai Indians franchise in which he was the director of cricket first and later on he became the head of global development. Before that, he played with the three IPL teams which are MI, Royal Challengers Bengaluru as well as Delhi Daredevils. He played 100 games for three teams over ten seasons, taking 102 wickets and retiring from all forms of cricket after leading Daredevils in 2017.
Along with the role of mentor, LSG might assign a bigger role to Zaheer Khan he may be involved with the scouting and player-development programmes at the time of off-season.
The backroom of LSG is right now led by Justin Langer, who also has replaced Andy Flower from the post of head coach for the IPL 2024, in which Lance Klusener and Adam Voges are his assistants. In their inaugural two seasons, the team captained by KL Rahul secured playoff berths, narrowly missing out on a top-four spot in 2024 due to net run-rate.
Zaheer might come back to the IPL at the same time that teams are getting ready for a big auction. The IPL will probably tell us the rules for keeping players by early September.
Elsewhere, Punjab Kings are also searching for an Indian head coach to replace Trevor Bayliss. They were interested in hiring VVS Laxman, but that won't happen because Laxman is continuing as the head of the BCCI's National Cricket Academy. Right now, Sanjay Bangar is working with them as head of cricket development.
